Statistics on House Demolitions in Gaza during the Operations Cast Lead
ICAHD estimates that some 4,247 Palestinian homes were demolished in the Gaza Strip during Operation Cast Lead, based on information received from two departments of the United Nations.
With updated information we might add much or all of Category 4 to Category 5 as those with “collapsed sections” often turn out to be uninhabitable and beyond repair. This information is preliminary, and subject to significant change as more data becomes available. Last updated on 13 February 2009.
Damage to housing units was divided according to the following five categories:
Cat. 1 - No damage
Cat. 2 - Broken windows, can be repaired
Cat. 3 - Medium damage, including holes in walls, burned rooms, with habitable space, can be repaired
Cat. 4 - Heavy damage, including collapsed section of house, numerous holes, with existing habitable space and can be repaired
Cat. 5 - Destroyed, requires full reconstruction.
